Slime and Sugar Crystals

Today we certainly had fun in science!

We made slime and sugar crystals.

Slime:
Combine 1 teaspoon borax (you can get this in the cleaning section of the supermarket) and 1 cup of water in a bowl.
Combine 1/2 cup PVA glue and 1/2 cup water in another bowl.
Add food colouring to the PVA mixture.
Pour the PVA mixture into the borax mixture.
Knead the slime - as you continue to knead it, it will become less sticky and more firm.
Tip out the remaining water.

Store in an air tight container in the fridge. It lasts about a month.

Sugar Crystals:
Combine 2 - 3 cups of sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan.
Stir over low heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Add some food colouring for fun.
Pour into a glass jar.
Use a peg to hold a wooden chopstick in the solution - don't let it touch the sides or the bottom of the jar.
Leave the jar undisturbed for about a week.

Art

Today we created some beautiful trees in Art. I'm really proud of how well they've turned out. Well done class!

Last week we created some beautiful flowers for our Mothers for Mother's Day. I hope that your mums all liked their gifts!

Density Experiment

To measure the states of matter we measure their volume, mass and density.

  • Volume: - how much space an object takes up
  • Mass: - how much matter an object has
  • Density: - how heavy an object is for its size

Weight is different to density. Weight measures the effect of gravity on an object.

We measure the states of matter using the metric system.

  • Volume: - measured in litres or metre cubed
  • Mass: - measured in grams
  • Density: - mass divided by volume
